EdTech 543: Curated Topic Common Core Standards ~ Pick a Side!

MODULE 4 Assignment:  Curate a topic of your choice; assess your and other students’ curations

  • Using a tool specific for curation (e.g, Scoopit, Educlipper, LessonPaths, PearlTrees, Livebinders), curate a topic of your choice, applicable to your content areas and/or grade level. This is an individual project. Include at least 25 resources.  Try to post earlier than the due date so your group members can complete the following steps.
  • Post it in any platform where both you and your mini-PLN group can give feedback using the criteria you developed in first assignment of this module.
  • Use your group’s checklist to self-assess its value.  Make sure you use all of your group’s curation criteria in your assessment. Your submitted assignment needs to show direct evidence that you used your group’s criteria. Post your results in the comments section where you posted your the link to your Curated Topic.
  • Use your group’s checklist to assess the curated topics of your group members.  Make sure you use all of your group’s curation criteria in your assessment.  Your submitted assignment needs to show direct evidence that you used your group’s criteria. Please note what was especially noteworthy and also what needs further development/tweaking.

Initially I wanted to do my curation on Algebra topics; however, I was not pleased with the quality of the resources I found.  So I decided to address the hottest topic in education these days:  Common Core Standards.

First I had to decide which platform to use.  I explored all the options but since I wanted to remain neutral on the topic I felt ScoopIt was the best resource to use.

I began by researching exactly what the standards are and why they were developed.  Then I went in to the controversy.  I tried to present multiple variations of the “pro” and “con” sides of the argument without divulging my own position.  My goal was to present the reader with all of the information, objectively, so they could make their own decision.

Finally, I used the criteria developed by my PLN to evaluate myself.

Here is my curation of the Common Core Standards.   http://www.scoop.it/t/edtech-543-curated-algebra

Final Thoughts:

After evaluating myself and the members of my PLN I really wish I could go back and change some of our criteria.  I realized that some of the items were repetitive or could not be evaluated if ScoopIt was used.
